Craft Mechanical

Our Craft Mechanics specialise in the maintenance, and occasional manufacture, of all mechanical equipment to ensure optimum and consistent performance levels. Mechanical craftspeople are highly skilled and can work in a wide variety of industries and sectors with complex plant and equipment.

What will my apprenticeship involve?

As part of your apprenticeship you will follow an apprenticeship standard. Apprenticeship standards show what you will be doing as part of your apprenticeship and the skills required as part of that job role. For our Craft Mechanical Apprenticeship you will follow the Maintenance & Operations Engineering Technician Standard at Level 3. For the first year of the Craft Mechanical Apprenticeship you will spend your time at the onsite training facility which will teach you all of the key engineering skills you will require as part of your apprenticeship. You will learn about:

  • Health and safety
  • Bench fitting
  • Mechanical maintenance
  • Fault-finding
  • Safe use of tools
  • Milling
  • Turning
  • Basic pipe fitting
  • Auto CAD

Following your first year at the training school you will then join the NNL Craft team at one of our facilities and attend College on a day release basis.

What will I be involved in on a day-to-day basis?

Your working day will incorporate:

  • Manufacturing components
  • Assembling and installing machinery
  • Continuing maintenance of equipment
  • Working with precision and accuracy
  • Approaching work logically and with a thorough attention to detail
  • Interpreting drawings and diagrams
  • Diagnosing and fault-finding problems with machinery and equipment
  • Co-operating with colleagues to ensure work is carried out to a high standard

What qualifications will I obtain as part of the apprenticeship?

You will receive qualifications listed as part of the Level 3 Maintenance and Operations Engineering Technician apprenticeship standard.

What locations is this apprenticeship available at?

We offer our Craft Mechanical Apprenticeship at our Preston and Sellafield facilities.

What qualifications do I need to apply for the apprenticeship?

You’ll already have a good academic background when you apply for an apprenticeship with us. You should have attained or be on track to achieving 5 GCSE’s A-C (New Grading 9-4) including Maths & English. We’re looking for bright, enthusiastic achievers who’ll want to be part of our mission to grow the nuclear industry. Applicants must be 16 or over.

What will I be paid as part of my apprenticeship?

We offer a competitive salary for all of our apprentices and all of our apprentices receive an annual increase for each year of their apprenticeship.
