National Nuclear Laboratory

Work experience

If you’re currently at school or college and have an interest in a STEM career, our work experience programme can offer you a real insight into the nuclear industry and the opportunity for you to learn more about future career paths.

APPLICATIONS FOR OUR 2023 WORK EXPERIENCE PROGRAMME ARE NOW CLOSED.

Why should I consider work experience?

Work experience allows you to gain real insight into industry and the work environment providing you with experience of an industry, organisation and role. Employers also look to see if you have any work experience as part of any job applications, so any experience you do have will help you in the process of securing a job.

What does our work experience programme involve?

The work experience week has been designed to give you a real insight of what it is like to work in the nuclear industry.

During the week, you will get to talk to industry experts about their work in the Nuclear Industry as well as meeting our Graduates and Apprentices who will talk about life on our Early Careers programmes.

Where does NNL’s work experience programme take place?

The work experience weeks will be carried out online. You will therefore need access to a computer with a video camera and Microsoft Teams.

How long is the work experience for?

The Work Experience programme will last for 3-5 days.

Am I eligible for the work experience programme?

As part of our work experience programme we provide opportunities for students at both GCSE Year 10 and 11 and A-Level/BTEC Year 12 and 13. If you would like to be considered for a place on our programme you must, in general, be studying STEM based subjects.

I have a relative or contact that works at NNL. Can I do work experience shadowing this person?

In line with our Equality, Diversity and Inclusion policy all opportunities to join our programmes are advertised on our website and promoted via our social media channels.  We typically offer work experience in the summer term and applications for the programme open in early Spring.  Unfortunately, we are not able to accommodate or support individual work experience or work shadowing experiences outside of this period.  This is to ensure that our opportunities are offered on a fair and inclusive basis and are in line with our health, safety and safeguarding of young people procedures.
